There are nearly 250 development applications awaiting clearance from Shoalhaven City Council.
Council aims to process each DA within 90 days.
On average council has been approving 50 DAs per month – at that rate, residents could be waiting five months for the green light on simple renovation plans.
A Shoalhaven resident intent on renovating his home alerted the South Coast Register to the issue, and preferred not to be named.
His architect has assured him the work will be cleared through council’s planning department once it’s addressed.
“The thing is, it’s sitting in a pile, waiting to be stamped,” he said.
“There aren’t enough staff at council to deal with the building boom.
“My builder has three DAs sitting there, he’s ropable.
“The housing market in Sydney is feeding all of this, and businesses here need to make sure they get as much value out of it while they can.”
On Thursday, South Coast Register contacted Shoalhaven Council regarding the backlog, however council has not supplied a response.
