Ambulance crews and police officers were called to Tom Brown Parade at 8.15am.
When they arrived they found a 21-year-old man who had been stabbed twice in the chest with what was believed to be a knife with a two-inch blade.
The man also had at least four stab wounds to his legs.
At this stage it is unsure whether the attack occurred inside a home in the street or outside on the road.
Lake Illawarra Local Area Command Acting Inspector Jack Brown said the victim was “responsive” when he was loaded into an ambulance after being treated by paramedics.
“He’s been transported to Wollongong Hospital with wounds that ambulance [officers] have informed us are potentially life-threatening,” Insp Brown said.
The victim did not offer police any indication as to who had stabbed him before he was taken to hospital, Insp Brown said.
He said police could not state whether the stabbing was the result of a domestic incident.
“At this stage the incident is still being investigated and the circumstances are unclear,” he said.
“We have detectives and crime scene investigators on scene. The location has been declared a crime scene and police will continue to investigate throughout the morning.”
Insp Brown said police had some leads, and a woman from the same house as the victim was taken to a police station where “she is providing us with some information in relation to what’s happened.”
“Any witnesses to the incident, we would very much like to hear from them,” he said.
