The rainbow walk and community picnic, organised last week, and given approval by local authorities on Monday, starts at Harry Sawkins Park at 11am, and wraps up at 2.30pm.

“This isn’t about pushing an agenda, it’s about showing we’re a family, a community,” organiser Dawn Hawkins said.

“We want to show support to people who might be sitting there, feeling very alone.”

She said it would be of great encouragement to a handful of local LGBTI people who have called her recently, airing concerns about workplace discrimination.

Dawn expects supporters to travel from as far as Sydney and Batemans Bay for the event.

“It’s so exciting,” she said.

“Usually we’re travelling up to Wollongong, but this time they’ll be coming here.”

Sixty people have indicated they will be attending via the Facebook event ‘Marriage equality community picnic’.
