Many homeless people are struggling just to feed themselves, let alone trying to pay for those unexpected costs that regularly hit them.
The Shoalhaven Homeless Hub does what it can to help people meet this unexpected costs of living but is in desperate need of a cash injection.
Julie Bugden, from the Hub, says they hope the community will assist with a badly needed financial boost.
“Without the community’s help with donations to the Hub we would not be able to assist the homeless as much,” she said.
The community regularly donates things like toiletries and food.
“Whenever we put a call out the community supports us and we get milk, cereals and biscuits. We are okay for food and now what we need is cash donations,” she said.
“During winter we went out and spent $300 on Ugg Boots just to keep people warm and we buy things like tracksuit pants because many people just wear shorts.”
They also buy jackets, underwear and socks.
The group has started a Go Fund Me page and to make a donation got to www.gofundme.com/shoalhaven-homeless-hub and all donations are appreciated.
The Hub has been flatout of late and things are not slowing down.
The cold hard statistics show how important the centre is for people in need.
Since July last year up to June this year 1858 people made use of the centre and there are days when the staff sometimes feel overwhelmed with it all.
The statistics show that homelessness is not just a seasonal concern - it's an all year round problem.
In August 2016 200 people came to the hub for help and in November (2016) 213 people needed support.
New clients regularly knock on the centre’s door seeking assistance.
The highest number of new clients on a monthly basis were August last year 56 people, 53 in February this year and 49 in May 2017.
Already this month 158 have come up to the hub for a shower, do laundry and in general get support..
