The long-time SBS broadcaster was remembered at a state funeral at St Mary's Cathedral on Monday morning.
New South Wales premier Gladys Berejiklian and governor David Hurley are in attendance, along with a who's who of Australian football.
Former Socceroos Paul Okon, Craig Moore, John Aloisi, Tim Cahill, Nick Carle, Clint Bolton and Matildas Julie Murray and Melissa Barbieri are to join with members of Murray's family to act as pallbearers.
Murray's unique place in the Australian sporting landscape was reflected by an overwhelming turnout for the service.
Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou and Matildas boss Alen Stajcic are also in attendance, with FFA supremo Steven Lowy and chief executive David Gallop.
The Australian and NSW flags are flying at half-mast across NSW in tribute to Murray, who died on July 31 aged 71.
The broadcaster of 35 years had fought a long battle with illness.
Murray, who emigrated from Hungary as a child, in later years added an advocacy of refugees and multiculturalism to his love of the world game.
Many guests at the service have worn white, as requested by Murray's family, in honour of a "multicultural world".
Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull last week credited Murray with turning the hearts of Australians to football.
Murray is survived by partner Maria and daughters Tania and Natalie.
