Among them were councillors and staff from Shoalhaven City Council - some of them in wheelchairs; one even blindfolded – and local residents living with disabilities.
This was the launch of council’s Disability Inclusion Plan 2017-2021. The idea was to give the able bodied people from council an insight into the challenges facing disabled people when they have to go into town.
The difficulties they encountered ranged from the lack of ramps to negotiating steps within the CBD’s shops.
The action plan outlines the steps council and other agencies will take over the next four years to make the CBD more accessible.
Council is offering shop owners financial assistance to the tune of $3000 to make their businesses more accessible.
