The auxiliary and its members have supported the local hospital for many years, providing numerous pieces of equipment staff have required.
Again this year the auxiliary has donated considerable funds to the hospital to purchase items on the staff’s wishlist.
This year two iPads were purchased for the occupational therapy and speech therapy units, a syringe driver for the medical ward and two sofa beds.
The iPads are used with patients for both rehabilitation and speech therapy to allow them to get feedback on their recoveries, while also being able to access apps in their home environment. As well as being used for patient therapy on wards, they are also used to allow staff to draw up any possible alterations patients may need to their homes during their recoveries.
The syringe driver is used to care for patients on end of life pathways. It slowly infuses medications that assist with pain, nausea, anxiety, or any other symptoms related to their palliative condition.
“We would not be able to provide the service we do without the support of our auxiliaries,” said operations manager Brad Scotcher.
“They [the auxiliaries] do a wonderful job in providing us with some hard earned money that they raise over the course of the year to help us get this sort of equipment.
“On top of that, this year we’ve also bought two sofa beds for patient’s relatives when they stay over night which can be particularly helpful with patients who are near end of life or patients who have dementia.”
