The two girls soccer teams were tightly matched which made for a very entertaining game for round five of the PSSA Girls State Soccer Knockout.
In the first half there were many chances at both ends with Milton holding the bulk of possession however they couldn’t create any chances.
Issabelle Harris from Sussex Inlet had two good chances in the first half but was caught by the offside trap. The half ended 0-0.
In the second half Milton came out pumped up and looked very good. However, yet again the Sussex Inlet defenders were too strong. Keeley Penrose, Hannah Bowman and Jasmine Blundell kept the backline impenetrable and ensured no goals within the first few minutes after bucket loads of pressure.
The first goal saw Maddy Harris pick up the ball in midfield and chip it over the heads of defenders for Sussex striker Issabelle Harris.
Issabelle took a nice touch and sprinted away to score and make it 1-0 to Sussex. Five minutes later and the sister duo were at it again causing havoc. Another long ball to sister Issabelle seemed deadly as Issabelle slotted it between the keepers legs making it 2-0 with about ten minutes to go.
The game seemed all but over however Milton scored a great goal with five minutes to go to keep the match interesting. Sussex again defended well and saw out the match for a 2-1 win.
“The girls were clinical today in front of goal. We only had a number of chances and took both of them which eventually won us the match,” Sussex coach Adam Quinn said.
Sussex Inlet now move into round six of the State tournament against Shell Cove.
“We get to play the next game at Sussex, Shell Cove will be a very tough opponent but we are yet to concede at home and the girls are improving all the time,” Adam said.
The best players for Sussex Inlet were Ana Pousini in goals, Olivia Crehan on the right wing and Keeley Penrose at left back. Issabelle Harris also had a fantastic game up front and is quickly becoming an excellent striker. Milton’s best was Jaya Bowman.
