Of all the firefighters registered to climb 98 floors of a Sydney building wearing 20kg of equipment for motor neurone disease research, Nowra’s Hayley Dunn leads the fundraising stakes.
Hayley from NSW Fire and Rescue Service took part in last year’s event that raised more than $500,000 for charity, and this year’s climb takes place on October 14.
“It will be a gruelling challenge, especially being in a stairwell where the air quality isn’t that great,” she said.
“However it is nothing in comparison to the challenge patients with MND face every day.
“As part of our job, we’re there to help the community, doing charity events is all part of it.”
Hayley, 25, recently lost a friend to MND.
“I met Ann Bennett at the firefighting championships, she passed away a couple of months ago,” she said.
“I’ll be dedicating it to her.”
There are 12 local firefighters taking part in the event, collectively they have raised nearly $3000, individually Hayley has raised $1550.
No doubt the number grew on Saturday when a Cambewarra Rural Fire Service crew hosted a fundraising BBQ at Woolworths, Nowra.
Hayley has been training hard for the event.
“I go to the gym a lot anyway,”
“This year I’m hoping to do the Melbourne stair climb in September, so that’ll be a warm up to the big event.”
She will climb 28 floors wearing 25kg of gear at ‘Step up to fight depression, PTSD and suicide’ involving 500 firefighters in Melbourne on September 2.
