When the Country Women’s Association (CWA) comes up in conversation, talk of scones often follows.
While it’s true they’re probably the best scones you’ll ever have, you’d be sorely mistaken for assuming that’s all the CWA is about.
The CWA is now the largest all-female advocacy group in Australia with more than 10,000 members in NSW.
Since their inception in the 1920’s they’ve lobbied different levels of government on issues affecting agriculture and the environment, education, health telecommunication and transport.
“Whilst we work to fundraise we form wonderful friendships, find much joy in doing for others and have fun in the work that we do to support our community.
- Monica Fafeita
The Jervis Bay Evening Branch of the CWA of NSW, is currently gearing up to host their annual grocery drive in early August.
The grocery drive will be held on Saturday, August 5 from 8am until noon. A stand will be in place outside of Woolworths at Marketplace Vincentia. Everyone is encouraged to put an extra item in their trolley to donate for local female victims of domestic violence.
All the items will be delivered to SAHSSI (Supported Accommodation and Services Shoalhaven Illawarra)
The branch will also host a high tea next month. After the success of their inaugural event last year, this year’s high tea is already half sold out.
“Whilst we work to fundraise we form wonderful friendships, find much joy in doing for others and have fun in the work that we do to support our community,” Jervis Bay member Monica Fafeita said.
“We share a commitment to improving the lives of women and their families.”
The ‘Putting on the Ritz’ high tea will be held on Saturday, August 26 at the Huskisson Community Centre. Doors open at 2.15pm and the event will start at 2.30pm.
"Currently we are looking for new members to help us and are encouraging younger people too – we need you to help carry on the work.
- Monica Fafeita
Cost is $20 per person and everyone is encouraged to ‘dress for the ritz’ and bring their own cup, saucer and plate to be judged for a prize.
A musician will take everyone back through the era of the thirties and forties.
Keeping busy, the branch also began a program serving breakfast two days a week at a local primary school.
WIth so many worthwhile causes to continue, Monica said more members are needed.
”Currently we are looking for new members to help us and are encouraging younger people too – we need you to help carry on the work,” she said.
The CWA was first formed in the 1920s to support isolated women and mothers on the land.
They worked tirelessly to set up and fund baby health centres when women needed support in learning how to care for their babies.
The members worked to fund bush nurses and staff maternity wards. Nurses taught prenatal and postnatal care and showed women how to feed and clothe their babies.
The Jervis Bay Evening Group meets on the second Tuesday of each month at the Vincentia Golf Club, 49 Murray Street, Vincentia.
