The current number three on the leaderboard was dispatched by reigning world champion John John Florence, of Hawaii, in flawless swell.
Wright managed scores of 6.23 and 8.2, for a combined 14.50, from his six scoring rides – while Florence only needed five rides to score 16.50 (7.83 and 8.67).
Wright will now start preparation for the Billabong Pro Tahiti, Teahupoʻo, Tahiti, which runs from August 11-22.
