The Nowra Poultry Club began in 1957 and this year celebrated 60 years of poultry shows with their Diamond Jubilee Show.
Early in the club’s history, the Tyrrell family from Terara were active members, serving several terms as president.
Mr K Schubert of Nowra also served as secretary and treasurer for the club’s first five years.
Many local families were involved in the early days of the cub, such as the Moxons from Bomaderry, and Mottrams and McGregors from Nowra.
On hearing of this 60th year of the club, relatives of long ago members, the Moxons and Maconachies, came forward and shared memories and mementoes of their families’ involvement with the club.
On Sunday, July 16 , the club’s 60th annual show was held at the Poultry Pavilion at Nowra Showground where the best of the pure breeds of poultry in all sizes, shapes and colours were showcased.
Included were some rare breeds whose very existence is due to their continued and dedicated breeding by poultry enthusiasts.
The pavilion was filled with a lineup of more than 440 poultry, including a good line up of 48 ducks, all vying for ribbons and prizes.
The Junior Section, for exhibitors under 14-years-old, was very well supported this year, with lots of certificates and prizes awarded to these junior poultry lovers.
High School students and their teachers from Nowra, Vincentia and Shoalhaven High Schools were keen competitors and their birds won some top awards.
A special award for the ‘School Bird of Show’ was won by Vincentia High School with their Indian Runner Duck.
The show attracted a large crowd of members of the public who were interested in seeing the different breeds of poultry and what ones they would like for their backyards.
A family friendly party atmosphere was enjoyed on the day, with entertainment by the Nowra Ukulele group, NukeM, craft activities for the younger folk and a celebratory chocolate cake to share.
The Nowra Poultry Club is for all poultry enthusiasts who would like to further their knowledge of keeping poultry and to enjoy meeting and networking with other like-minded poultry enthusiasts.
New members are always welcome. Membership is $15 per year for a family or $10 for individual membership. Meetings are held on the fourth Wednesdays monthly, 7pm at the Nowra Showground Poultry Pavilion.
