The Nowra Poultry Club will host their Diamond Jubilee Poultry Show on Sunday, July 16.
With 60 years to celebrate, club president Laurie Talbot is looking forward to welcoming competitors and visitors through the pavilion doors.
“We’re hoping for around 400 entries and it’s open for everyone to come along and see what it’s all about,” he said.
A new section has been introduced this year for local high school students.
The interschool competition for the best exhibit by a high school will see the winning students walk away with ‘The School Bird of the Show’ prize.
Vincentia High School, Nowra High School and Shoalhaven High School have already entered.
A ‘know your poultry’ competition will also be held for students, with a series of multiple choice questions to test their knowledge on all aspects of poultry care.
Seventeen-year-old Jessica Bonnitcha is one young competitor who will be showing her flock next weekend.
‘Gunning’, her Silver Spangled Hamburg rooster will be getting the first class treatment ahead of the show.
“He’ll be entering next week with a few of his sisters and he’ll have to have a good wash all over because he’s white and he gets very dirty,” Jessica said.
While Jessica is a seasoned competitor, next weekend’s event will be Gunning’s first show.
After starting with around 20 members in 1957, the club now has almost 60 people ready to impress with their poultry at the Diamond Jubilee show.
All past members are encouraged to head along and share their memories of their time with the club.
There will be a barbecue lunch, as well as entertainment from Nowra’s ukulele group NukeM.
Everyone is encouraged to head to the Poultry Pavilion at Nowra Showground between 9.30am and 3pm on Sunday, July 16.
Competition entries close on Monday, July 10 or when the shed is full.
