The group was formed on May 1 and sees a range of ages join in for weekday swims in Huskisson and Sunday morning competitions.
Club captain John Stapleton said while the group is now a member of the Winter Swimming Association of Australia, it’s the social aspect that keeps everyone coming back for more.
“It’s open to everyone and it’s a great social outlet,” he said.
“It always includes a coffee and hot soup made by Ronnie afterwards.”
While the South Coast isn’t known for its warm water at the best of times, John said winter has its own drawcards.
“A lot of us are ex footballers and have done other sports so you find it’s like going into an ice bath, when you get out of the ice cold water you’ve got no aches and pains for the rest of the day, it definitely keeps your blood moving,” he said.
“Apart from having the beach to yourself, it’s just great outlet with mates and friends in the area.”
Members range in age from seven-year-old Juliette Levy to 72-year-old John himself.
Juliette learnt to swim on the beach and has no problems keeping up with her parents on the morning swims. When it comes to warming up after, she’s a step above the regular hot chocolate too.
“I have a decaf,” she said.
The group welcomes anybody who would like to join in. Their Sunday morning swims kick-off from around 8.30am. For more information contact John on 0412 053 859.
