At 17, Whittington has won the NVC’s B grade section of the club’s 2017 individual time trial championship and followed up a week later with a dominant ride to win the B grade criterium in the latest round of the Optus Series ahead of a strong graded field.
Steve Crossman of Future Endurance Coaching said that local triathletes racing with the Nowra Velo Club will be a great assistance for the juniors in the draft legal cycling legs of their respective triathlons and the ITU’s decision to render the Sprint Distance and World Championships also as draft legal events.
Troy Whittington comes from a Junior National level running background and over the last 18 months has gone from a triathlon novice to making the NSW State Schools team for the Triathlon Australia National School Triathlon Festival, placing in the top 15.
Last Sunday’s NVC criterium saw Brooklyn Henry start in his first cycle race where this youngster lined up in the C grade race with some older and wiser bike racers. Brooklyn was still in the mix at the finish and despite finishing 12th he was still with the lead group.
Brooklyn has made a big impression on the triathlon scene the last six months winning his age group in the NSW Tri-Series in the Enforcer distance. He also won his age division at the NSW All-Schools Triathlon. Brooklyn is from a swimming background. Freya Robinson-Mills is also from a swimming background. Also a young competitor, Freya missed a top placing in the NSW All-Schools following an injury earlier in the year.
Freya has been with the NVC for two months and has earned praise from some of the older cycling members for how she has adapted quickly to bunch riding and racing. Freya raced the D grade at Nowra Velo last week and finished in sixth position. Freya is under the guidance of both Crossman’s Future Endurance Coaching and Damian Mason of The Watt’s Factory for her cycling specific training.
Steve Crossman is into his second year of racing with Nowra Velo. Crossman races in the local A grade and is a strong and respected member of that group. While not as fast as some of the NVC’s established A grade riders, Crossman is rapidly gaining cycle racing speed. His long chase after the latest criterium winner Levi Johns was impressive.
Following a back injury Crossman has shelved long course triathlons to focus on shorter events and has now won his division in the NSW Tri series sprint distance.
Some of the older triathletes with the Nowra Velo for the past two years include Rob Pickard, Bill Stahlhut, Annette Sampson and Tony McGowan. Sampson upstaged some of the men to win a time trial championship event last year.
The Nowra Velo Club is pleased to have these multisport athletes competing in their local races.
