I hope that everyone makes it through to the end, however, sadly some of us won’t.
To qualify this statement I would like to talk about my trip to Jindabyne last weekend.
Picture this. The date was June 23, 2017. It was a Friday. The time was 9am.
There was a fresh breeze blowing from the south making the ambient temperature a cool 9 degrees.
I was prepared for the big three-day trip to Jindabyne.
A short time earlier I had placed my small suitcase in the rear of the car which fitted quite neatly between the wife’s eight suitcases, four dress suits and two pillows.
I checked with my wife if she was ready to go, she said ‘yes I’m ready. I just have to hang out the washing and make the bed and do the dishes.’
“So you’re not ready?” I said.
Let’s now fast forward a bit.
I drove to Canberra no problem, there weren’t many vehicles along the back road past Nerriga.
The road from Canberra to Cooma was a bit more problematic. There were about 10 kangaroo carcasses on the road as well as one smashed car on the side of the road.
It was obvious it had hit the big kangaroo which was lying on the side of the road a short distance away.
The fact that there was a crashed car and a number of roo carcases made me continually scan the periphery of the road edges and to be aware of my speed.
I stuck to the speed limit of 100kph.
There were however a few drivers that must have felt that they were special and pretty important because I was passed several times by vehicles travelling at high speeds.
But that was nothing compared to the Alpine Way heading to Jindabyne.
Travelling from Cooma to Jindabyne I witnessed the most dangerous driving manoeuvres by a number of drivers who should not have their licences at all.
Passing at speed over double lines. Passing at speed over double lines following two other vehicles doing the same. Passing at speed towards blind corners, speeding on icy roads.
These idiot drivers are the ones that kill innocent people doing the right thing on our roads.
It could be a member of your family, your grandkids or a friend that is the next victim of stupid driving by someone else.
Please slow down on our roads and do the right thing.
If you don’t, the next big trip for you may be the trip to jail after being found guilty of killing someone in a prang.
I urge everyone, please drive to the conditions, follow the road rules, only pass when safe to do so and remember that you are not the only road user.
Be courteous and hopefully we will all make it to Christmas.
Remember you can Dob in a Druggie any time you like by contacting Nowra Police or ringing Crime Stoppers.
