Firefighters extinguished the blaze however the first floor premises – where the elderly man is believed to have been sleeping – were extensively damaged.
Firefighters found his body once they had contained the fire.
Police report the fire does not appear to be suspicious.
Police will prepare a report for the information of the Coroner outlining the full circumstances surrounding the man’s death.
Earlier the South Coast Register reported:
A man has died in Greenwell Point this morning, as flames engulfed the top floor of his home.
Neighbours and local fishermen were first to respond, calling emergency services at 6.30am, and breaking into to the house in an attempt to save the man.
Fire crews arrived on the scene on the corner of Greenwell Point Road and Reg Wilson Way before 7am.
Six crews controlled the fire immediately.
Initially it was feared another person was home during the fire, but they have been located since.
Fire crews remain at the scene, police will investigate the circumstances of the man’s death.
