The students are taking part in the ‘One Million Stars to End Violence’ project and want people to live in safer communities.

The students are also Y Quest entrants and are being supported by the Nowra based YWCA.

Being a provider of Youth Programs and Domestic Violence support services, the ‘One Million Stars to End Violence’ Project struck a chord with Nowra’s YWCA .

The Y-Quest girls have made over 300 stars so far, showing their support for the cause and commitment to creating a safer community.

Project creator and Queensland-based artist Maryann Talia Pau collaborated with the Queensland Government last year in an effort to engage communities across the world to help weave one million stars for an installation during the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games as part of the arts and cultural program.

‘‘Each woven star represents light, hope, courage and solidarity to end all forms of violence in our world,’’ Ms Talia Pau.

The YWCA in partnership with the Commonwealth Bank in Nowra are supporting Maryann’s endeavour, by encouraging organisations and individuals to make stars.

Star weavers make a statement against violence and show their support for a safer society.

YWCA incorporated star weaving into its own Y-Quest, Y-B.R.A.V.E. and Links2Learning - Girls Only programs, as a way to engage young people in a conversation about violence.

Every member of the community is encouraged to weave stars and drop their creations off at the YWCA Nowra office, 8 McGrath Avenue by May 31.

All stars will be displayed at the Nowra Commonwealth Bank after June 16t and will be part of an installation at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games 2018.

Y-Quest is a leadership program for Year 9 students in partnership with high schools in Nowra. The program promotes healthy self-esteem and positive life choices.

Y-Quest is about empowering young women, and building their resilience and confidence.
