Heading into the top of the table encounter, both the Breakers and Tigers hadn’t tasted defeat this season, but that all changed at Bomaderry Oval on Saturday.
Four goals from one of the competition’s in-form players Jordan Lando and one by Paul Gaffney secured all three points for Jadon Lavington’s men – making them a perfect seven from seven on the season.
“I’m happy with the result but disappointed with the two goals we leaked,” Lavington said.
“The first was an unnecessary free kick we gave away and the second was clearly us switching off before the final whistle.
“Bomaderry were very good for most of the game – you can tell they are still gelling as a unit and I’m sure it will be a different story next time we meet.
“The Tigers kept our goalkeeper Joel Lockard very busy on Saturday – he made some incredible saves and they probably should have scored more goals than the result shows.”
Reigning-premiers Culburra roared back into form thanks to a comprehensive 6-1 victory against St Georges Basin at Culburra Oval.
“I thought we were pretty dominant for the full 90 minutes which was good to see,” Culburra coach George Kulcsar said.
“We scored early and to Basin’s credit, they responded through a cracking goal – but their goal sort of kicked our boys into another gear and we never looked back.”
The victory was set up from a hat-trick by Dale Blundell, while Jack Miller, Doug Gray and Gui Danielewicz also found the back of the net.
“Overall, I was pleased with our defence including keeper Tom Matthews – during our three weeks off, we have tried to implement a couple of things such as minimising shots on goal, which I thought we did well,” Kulcsar said.
“Other to standout were of course Dale Blundell and Joel Fowler, who overcame illness and gave me 60 good minutes.”
Kulcsar admits the weekend felt they were starting their season all over again, following a three-week lay-off.
“I set a couple of challenges for the boys during our time off and to their credit they’ve responded and rose to the occasion,” he said.
“I’m very pleased and am looking forward to the Manyana clash – who historically been one of our tougher opponents.”
Elsewhere, Milton used goals from Derek Schofield, Dane Garnon and Julian Jansma-Smith to fuel their 3-2 victory against Huskisson.
“I’m very pleased we ended up securing all three points because this tight match could have gone either way,” Milton coach Rod Kain said.
At Sharman Park, Manyana upset Illaroo 2-1 Shoalhaven United and Sussex Seahawks had to settle for a 1-all draw.
