The latest work, on a Holt Centre wall, features local air-force veteran Narelle Hart and was recently completed by muralist Claire Foxton.
Ms Foxton’s work only took her five days to complete and sits wonderful alongside the other murals in Nowra’s CBD, which includes one of the respected artist Arthur Boyd.
Ms Foxton is a Wollongong based artist and she fast becoming a well known muralist.
“I have been painting large scale works for about a year,” she said.
She found sitting in her studio was not giving her the artist fulfilment she was seeking.
The muralist wanted to get out in the public and create works that everyone could enjoy.
“The woman I am painting is Narelle Hart - she is a female war veteran from the area and she has lived her for about 70 years and is 96-years-of-age,” Ms Foxton said.
“We wanted to highlight a female subject and a couple of other artists have done male centric works but we wanted to something on Narelle.
“I would have to say this is one of my biggest walls so it was challenging - definitely.”
Ms Foxton said she was now good at using a cherry-picker after working on the project.
“It’s pretty fun actually,” she said
Her project started off the ‘little squiggles’ for the face randomly put over the wall and then she took a photo of the wall and used a photoshop program and all the little squiggles became her reference point.
Not being a mathematical person she does not use grids to measure things out.
“I work with squiggles, “ she said.
She used bucket paint to complete her task and also used a little spray gun for the face shading and she finished the work off with a brush.
The muralist also used a roller brush which was hard on her arm and shoulder muscles.
Ms Foxton said the work would last for ages, allowing people to soak up its beauty for many decades.
She said the work gave her a sense of accomplishment and enjoyed her time in Norwa.
“It’s a really nice town and I did not realise there was so much going on with lots of cool little pockets and cafes - it has a cool vibe,” she said
