The pilot, a 26-year-old Strathfield man, took the microlight for an hour-long solo flight over the Illawarra before returning to the Albion Park airfield 10.58am.
He landed without incident, only to lose control at the northern end of the runway, a short distance from the Illawarra Highway.
The aircraft ran sideways off the tarmac, across some grass and into a culvert, before it came to rest.
Emergency services were contacted and responded in number, however the man did not require medical assistance.
Take-offs and landings continued at the airport as the aircraft was recovered. The microlight was removed from the area about 11.30am, with minor damage to one wing tip.
The incident has been reported to the Australian Transport Safety Bureau, which will now investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.
