Gilmore Labor candidate Fiona Phillips said the government had “repackaged an existing scheme”.
“They are not addressing the real issue of more jobs for Australians,” she said.
“I think it has just been rebadged.”
Although Mrs Phillips agreed the 457 visa policy “needed tightening” she said the latest changes would not have a “great affect on Australian jobs”.
“There are a lot of unanswered questions about it,” she said.
A 457 visa is a program for Australian employers to sponsor skilled overseas workers to work in the country temporarily.
Mrs Phillips said there were people working in the Gilmore electorate on 457 visas but did not know how many.
“I don’t know the numbers, but I know there are people working on 457 visas in Gilmore,” she said.
Gilmore MP Ann Sudmalis could not be contacted for comment on Wednesday, April 19.
Ms Sudmalis took to Facebook on April 18 with a link to a video about the changes posted by Prime Minister Malcom Turnbull and said: “Now there will be more employment opportunities #jobs #gilmore.”
