In conjunction with Shoalhaven City Council and the Commonwealth Funded Work for the Dole program through Sureway Employment and Training, Bay and Basin Community Resources (BBCR) have been able to provide the community with a safe walking trail, which follows the foreshore of St Georges Basin and is used by locals and tourists alike.
“A lot of the tree roots and rocks were exposed, so over the last 12 months we’ve worked a 5klm section to repair some of that damage to make a safer walking trail,” BBCR’s Steven Collins said.
“The bridge was lifted up by the flood water, so we've secured it back down and the approaches were quite a drop, probably 600 millimetres, so we’ve been able to add two new timber approach ramps onto the existing bridge.
“A special thanks goes to the participants who assisted with the project, they are the ones who did all the hard work.”
Mr Collins also acknowledged the partnership between BBCR and John Brown from Campbell Page and Clea Royce- Carter from Sureway noting that their support of the project provided a real positive outcome for the community.
“There's a lot of ageing residents and young people in the area who utilise the foreshore walk,” he said.
“Look at what we’ve got, it’s absolutely gorgeous and we can provide a safer walking trail for those people to come and enjoy what we have to offer.”
Shoalhaven City Council natural areas operations officer Kerry Thompson agreed the project was important for the community.
“The Basin walking track is a huge asset for the people around here and also the tourists,” she said.
“The BBCR Work for the Dole groups have made a huge contribution to enabling the track to be used in a safe manner.”
