The Edwardian mansion, accompanied by 16.5 acres of private park is constructed of solid sandstone, with 23 rooms over three levels, a widow’s walk, grand foyer and staircase, 13 fireplaces, heated swimming pool and tennis court.
The stables have been restored as maisonettes that are currently run as a luxury day spa to accompany the property’s wedding venue business.
Terrara House was part of the original 1000 acre Terrara Estate settled by the De Mestre family in 1845, before being sold in 1886 for 40,000 pounds to Hugh Mackenzie.
Mr Mackenzie built Terrara House between 1900 and 1904, using sandstone from Flatrock and floated down the Shoalhaven River on barges.
The homestead was the vision of architect Otto Beckett from Falls Creek and was built by Charles Moore and Joseph Gosang.
It is believed the mansion cost 10,000 pounds to construct.
Several of his children were married at Terrara House and perhaps it was an insight into what the future held for the historical estate.
Dairy farmer Michael Hyam purchased the property in 1929, a decade after Mr Mackenzie passed away, before it was again sold to chemist Ray and Laurette Coates in 1965.
In 1973 the property was knocked down to stage actor Darrell Riles for $62,750 at a public auction held by Mr Brian Kenny of AJ Campbell & Son.
In 1980, after an exhaustive renovation, it was once again auctioned. Two women from Sydney Miss McMahon and Miss Hensler purchased the property and transformed it into a function centre and restaurant.
Nowra obstetrician Dr Brian Hoolahan purchased the property only some 12 months later, in 1981.
In 1888 the grand property again changed hands, when it was purchased by Edward and Yvonne Rutty for $995,000, who used the home as a private residence. They took on the task of restoring the mansion’s interior and reconstructed the stables, converting them into luxurious bed and breakfast accommodation.
It was last traded in 2004 for $5 million when bought by radiologist Derek Glenn.
Terrara House is listed with Cassim Real Estate’s Michael Cassim and Bill Bridges.
