Roads and Maritime Services have released a short video showing what it will be like to drive the proposed Berry to Bomaderry upgrade of the Princes Highway.
The detailed final design for the upgrade is now complete, with the animation showing the highway upgrade, starting at the project’s northern boundary at Mullers Lane, travelling south towards Bomaderry.
The traffic levels shown in the animation are indicative of the expected traffic volumes in the year 2019.
The upgrade will complete the continued upgrade of the highway, joining up the Kiama Bypass, the Gerringong Bypass, and the Foxground Berry Bypass.
About 10.5 kilometres of four-lane highway (two lanes in each direction) with median separation will be provided between Mullers Lane, Berry and Cambewarra Road, Bomaderry.
Once the highway upgrade between Berry and Bomaderry is built it will complete four lanes of divided highway between Waterfall and Jervis Bay Road, Falls Creek.
Planning approval for the project is now in place and the NSW Government has provided $18 million in 2016-17 to continue planning for the highway upgrade.
This upgrade continues on from the current construction work between Foxground and Berry and the Gerringong upgrade that was officially opened to motorists in August 2015.
Upcoming work includes finalising property purchases and relocating utility services.
RMS has also installed fauna nest boxes to provide replacement habitat for native animals.
This work is in preparation for major construction work to begin. Archaeological investigations have been carried out and Aboriginal heritage items recovered.
The work will improving motorists’ journeys, improving road safety and access with a right turn bay into O’Keeffes Lane for northbound motorists.
There will be improved pedestrian safety with a two metre wide road shoulder and pedestrian footpath at the Jaspers Brush/Strongs Road and Meroo Road/ Pestells Lane overpasses and the Morschels Lane/ Devitts Lane underpass.
There will be three metre wide road shoulders on both sides of the highway.
Safer access for property owners will be provided by building a vehicle access track under the bridge at Flying Fox Creek.
There will be safer turning movements for motorists with u-turn bays along the length of the highway and safer crossings for wildlife with fauna crossings under the highway at Flying Fox, Jaspers Brush and Wileys creeks.
To reduce impacts to private properties by relocating Pestells Lane/Meroo Road interchange north by about 50 metres.
To improve traffic efficiency the Moss Vale Road roundabout will be upgraded with a left “slip” turning lane for motorists turning out of Moss Vale Road onto the Princes Highway that are travelling north.
That work is expected to start later this month.
