She had many relatives from the Nowra district and since the turn of the century the Anderson and Knapp families each have long associations with properties on both sides of the Shoalhaven River at both Terara and Bolong.
As a young woman, Lorna went on a holiday to visit her cousin Beryl Anderson, later Beryl Pepper, at Back Forest near Broughton Creek. It was there she met ‘the boy next door’ Ted Knapp, who she went on to marry in 1952 at Wolumla, near Bega.
The couple farmed at Back forest and later moved to Jamberoo where Ted continued to farm for the Walsh brothers until his retirement.
They were involved in the church together and after raising their three sons, Allan, Peter and Brian, Lorna became involved in organisations such as the Red Cross and the Country Women’s Association.
Together they moved back to Berry, but sadly, Ted passed away shortly after the move.
Over the years Mrs Knapp involved herself in the community and later joined Probus in Nowra where she continues to meet and make many new friends.
She considers herself to be blessed with four grandchildren, Matthew, Sally, Nicholas and Tyler.
Always the avid Cook, she has taken many a prize in State CWA cooking, Sydney Royal Easter Show cooking and of course at many local agricultural shows.
Later in life, she turned her hand to judging and proved to be quite the expert at that also.
Mrs Knapp’s son Brian Vassallo-Knapp said his mother put her age down to “leading a good life and just getting on with it”.
“She still lives at home, drives wherever she needs to go, does her own shopping and cooking and rarely says no to an opportunity to go on an outing, whether it be meeting with family and friends, going to a meeting or a show,” he said.
“She would not say no to the odd glass of red wine as well.”
