Under guidance of newly appointed coach Steve Glenday the boys start solidly with our undersized forward matching it with the Avondale pack early on. Tight head prop Corey Morrison, who has been closely following his fellow front partner’s direction of being able to find the try line, dived over mid-way through the first half to score near the sideline.
It was a great play the Van Goghs had set up off a line-out. Last year’s coach Shawn Bugg, sick of sitting on the sideline for the past few years, kicked the conversion. On the stroke of halftime Avondale gave away a timely penalty in front of the post to take the score to 10-0 at the half whistle.
A sleepy Van Goghs took to the field in the second half allowing the Wombats to score an easy try only minutes after play resumed. Wet conditions made from a scrappy half with plenty of dropped ball.
The Vincentia team made the most a ruck infringement by the home team and kicked another penalty goal from 40m out taking the scoreboard to the final score of 13-5.
It was a good game by the boys in purple & gold for the first hit out of the season with some brilliant displays from Pat Matson, Hugo Roszkiewicz, Ash William, Shawn Bugg, Allister Flanders and Jeremy Thomas.
