Motorbike upset
The rejection of the Yerriyong Motorbike Racetrack proposal has disappointed many including Council, but the JRPP had no option but to make this decision. The Environment Protection Bio-diversity Protection Act could not be contravened and the Parma Yerriyong Community Group also convinced the Panel of the disturbance to residents and an area where Parks and Reserves converge.

The outcome underlines the need for developers to employ qualified and experienced consultants to undertake the EIS and avoid people who may be tempted to deliver what it is the developers want to hear. In the long run it means that when errors are called out, the costs are incurred by the developer and time is wasted by Council and our elected representatives.
The exaggerated claims for employment and visitation to the site by Motorcycling NSW have given encouragement to local riders to expect a facility better than others in the State. The promise of funds from the Federal government has likewise created an expectation beyond sustainability, within a natural jewel like the Shoalhaven.

A heartfelt thank you
Having just spent eight days and nights as a public patient of Shoalhaven Hospital, including several nights in the Intensive Care Unit, I cannot speak highly enough of the professionalism, skill and dedication of this facility's staff.
From the surgical and medical teams, to the nursing, administrative, catering, cleaning, and other personnel, I was treated with nothing less than 100% compassion, respect and humanity.
The empathy, communication skills, and (mostly!) appropriate sense of humour displayed by the hospital staff made my stay that much more easy to bear. A special nod to the nurses in the ICU who are simply incredible.
Too often we hear negative feedback about our public health system; my recent experience has been nothing but positive. So thank you Shoalhaven Hospital and don't take this the wrong way, but I hope I never see you again!

Childcare battles
Some newspapers reported I supported the $1.6 bn childcare legislation that recently passed through Parliament. That is not true.
While it’s true the amendments Senator Hinch and I insisted upon in discussions with the Government removed childcare subsidies for people on incomes over $350,000, neither Senator Bernardi nor I supported the legislation even after it was amended.
It is wrong that people on low incomes should pay for the childcare of rich people.
