The group was founded by Nowra Uniting Church and Uniting Care Ageing and were given the use of a shed on church property in Junction Street.
The group began working in this single car garage in March 2007 and now operate from a shed at the back of the Caretaker's Cottage at the Nowra Showground.
About 45 members and their partners attended the luncheon at Shoalhaven Ex-Servicemen’s Sports Club.
That was the year I retired so I needed something to keep me occupied after I left work and it has certainly fulfilled that.
- Neville Bray
“I’ve been involved with the Men’s Shed right from the very beginning in 2007, I was the first treasurer,” Neville Bray said.
“That was the year I retired so I needed something to keep me occupied after I left work and it has certainly fulfilled that.
“It’s really great, I’m not a person who does woodworkers craft, I can make things if I need to but I really enjoy the companionship with the other men, I really enjoy that it’s good.”
Ray Spratt also joined the club in 2007.
“I find I’m in another world all together, I’ve never had the chance to use machinery or actually do woodwork,” he said.
“Any projects I’ve done, I’ve had help from people who knew what they were doing and also it’s very good company.”
Tribute was paid to long-time member Les Chittick, who sadly passed away on Tuesday, it was said he had every intention of attending the lunch and that the Men’s Shed was in the forefront of his mind until he passed.
