Many groups and organisations work closely with the school to provide support for young people and their families.
CareSouth’s Jennifer Toms conducted an awareness and early intervention activity at the school in 2016.
“Groups of kids from each year came in and built cardboard box houses to help reduce and change the stigma around homelessness,” she said.
“A lot of hidden homeless in the Shoalhaven are the couch surfer types in the youth population, they’re not necessarily seen out on the streets, they are more likely to be sleepovers who never end up going home.”
Shoalhaven Youth Health has held interactive youth forums, completed art projects and run parents clinics in collaboration with Shoalhaven High School.
“We have for may years worked with the school to develop programs that meet the changing needs of young people,” youth health promotion officer Wendi Hobbs said.
“As things change and issues come up we try to develop programs in consultation with the school to try and assist with students and their journey to adulthood.
“We have a lot of young people who’s parents have mental health, drug and alcohol issues and a lot of young people don’t know where to go to get help, so we provide support for the whole family, it’s a holistic approach.”
The school also took the opportunity to induct their new School Council Representatives as part of the event.
