But the two women are united by their unwavering determination to see the men they love freed for crimes they strongly believe they didn't commit.

On Thursday both women watched intently from the public gallery as the man who prosecuted their loved ones, the state's most senior prosecutor, Mark Tedeschi, QC, spent another day in the witness box being grilled about his actions.

Ms Lin is the wife of Robert Xie, who this year was convicted of murdering her brother Min Lin, his wife, sister-in-law and two boys at Epping in 2009.

The Chinese-born Ms Lin has steadfastly maintained her husband's innocence.

Ms Louise supported her then-boyfriend Simon Gittany throughout his trial for the murder of his fiancee Lisa Harnum. He was found guilty of throwing Ms Harnum off the balcony of their high-rise apartment in a fit of rage in 2011.

Both Xie and Gittany were prosecuted at various points by Mr Tedeschi, the state's Senior Crown prosecutor.

In 2008 Mr Tedeschi successfully prosecuted Mr Wood for the 1995 murder of his girlfriend Caroline Byrne. Mr Wood spent three years in jail before he was sensationally acquitted by the Court of Criminal Appeal in 2012.

Mr Wood, 54, is suing the state of NSW for millions of dollars in damages, claiming malicious prosecution.

In a statement of claim, Mr Wood alleges the state, via Mr Tedeschi, "misconducted" itself in various ways, including offering his own opinion to the jury and changing his case during the trial.

Mr Wood's barrister Bruce McClintock, SC, has taken Mr Tedeschi to task over various aspects of the Crown's circumstantial case.

In 2008, Mr Tedeschi told the jury that two witnesses who said they saw a green two-door Bentley driving near The Gap on the afternoon before Ms Byrne's death might have actually seen a four-door model.

Mr Wood often drove a unique four-door Bentley belonging to his boss, the late stockbroker Rene Rivkin. Ms Byrne, a 24-year-old model, was his girlfriend.

Mr McClintock put to Mr Tedeschi that he was trying to place Mr Wood at The Gap, at Watsons Bay, in the hours before Ms Byrne's death, even though there was no evidence to support such a contention.

Mr Tedeschi said he was "perfectly entitled" to suggest to the jury the witnesses may have actually seen a four-door Bentley.

"It was a little drop of illegitimate poison you were putting in the jury's mind," Mr McClintock said.

"I disagree," Mr Tedeschi replied.

"I want to suggest it was really quite dishonest," Mr McClintock said.

"I disagree," Mr Tedeschi replied.

Mr Tedeschi also denied that, during Mr Wood's trial, he tendered a photograph knowing the caption was incorrectly dated as 1996 when in fact it was taken in 2003.

The photograph showed bushes against the safety rail at the clifftop, and the Crown case was that Mr Wood chose that spot because he could get a four metre run-up, and be obscured from sight.

Mr Tedeschi said he only became aware of the error "second-hand" during the preparation for the appeal. However, he accepted that if he had known of the error, "that would be a breach of my obligations to the court".

The hearing before Justice Elizabeth Fullerton continues.
