Jake Gerald Platt, 22, pleaded guilty to assault in Nowra Local Court with Magistrate Gabriel Fleming sentencing him to nine months’ jail from August 24 this year, with a non-parole period of three months.
Court papers stated Platt was in the custody of Corrective Services at the Batemans Bay police station on January 23 when he appeared to have some sort of medical episode.
Police said Platt appeared “manic, was ranting and pressing his fingertips into his temples and was clenching his teeth”.
NSW Ambulance paramedics were called to the station and treated Platt in the charge room at about 8.30pm, administering an intramuscular antipsychotic drug which calmed him down.
Officers continued to monitor his condition in the dock area.
At 11pm a male paramedic told Platt he was going to take his observations.
Court papers said as the paramedic attempted to place a thermometer in Platt’s ear he clenched his right fist and punched the man in the temple area.
It is alleged a second punched missed the target.
The paramedic suffered neck pain and a headache.
The attack was captured on CCTV.
Platt was also charged with breaching an apprehended violence order following an incident in Nowra the day before.
