About 50 people from the electorate will march alongside 12,000 others on Saturday.

The Gilmore entry is number 16 of 187 floats in association with the National Equality Campaign and Australians 4 Equality groups, who will be forefront in the celebration of ‘Creating Equality’, the chosen theme for this year’s festival.

"I am so proud to have such an enthusiastic cross section of the community determined to tell the world Gilmore Supports Marriage Equality. We are all very excited,” Australian Marriage Equality Gilmore group spokesperson Dawn Hawkins said. 

Shoalhaven Mayor Amanda Findley, Councillor Annette Aldrick and Kiama Councillor Neil Reilly will also join the march.

“We are showing we are strong, proud and committed to bringing about true change to this region. A change that is inclusive and genuinely moving forward in our way of thinking and treating all of our community with respect and equality in law,” Amanda Findley, Annette Alldrick and Neil Reilly,” Ms Hawkins said. 

Ms Hawkins has witnessed the changing attitude towards Marriage Equality in the community. 

“The support of our local councils has shown there is room for respect and equality amongst all of our citizens and that our local politicians are connected to understanding the locals they represent,” she said. 

“The possibility of a plebiscite strengthened our numbers and I think was the turning point that made people realise how simple this could actually be, a vote in parliament that would take about 10 minutes and cost nothing.” 

Ms Hawkins said she was looking forward to sharing the experience with family and friends.

“We have grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, children, workmates, friends and there were even a few spots left for members of the LGBTI community,” she laughed.

“These are the people of Marriage Equality Gilmore that this means the most to and to see their faces of pride and conviction on the night, the celebration that they are making a difference to their community will be so rewarding.”

The group will travel to Sydney by coach before joining other participants for the parade at 7.30pm.

“It is so exciting and will definitely be a night to remember. We are right up there at the beginning and are part of some of the most celebrated floats. As the only electorate in Australia we will be well and truly celebrated.”
