Gwynneville musician Lucy Mills (who goes by the stage name of Leo) was a part of the trio who wrote and recorded the single Firefly purely online.

Also a part of the project – which was an NBN campaign – was Melbourne musician Harts (aka Darren Harts), who acted as the group’s mentor.

After only seeing each other on a screen for months, the pair met for the first time in real life at Leo’s Gwynneville house on Tuesday.

“It’s cool because you meet virtually and then you meet in real life and there’s that thing of how the screen can never really bring people together like they can in a room,” Harts said.

“But in terms of collaborating with music, it’s getting really close. Artistically it’s getting to the point where we can do a lot of stuff via the internet.”

Leo said she was quite happy with the song the band came up with.

“I like it, it’s really catchy, annoyingly so,” she said.

“I can’t get it out of my head when I hear it. So I’m actually really pleased with what happened, without how it came out.”

She found the process of working with other musicians online to be much better than expected.

“It was really interesting to me,” she said.

“It was something I’ve never really done before. I thought it might have been a bit restrictive because you couldn’t be in the same room with the people you’re collaborating with but it actually made me want to experiment more and open up a bit.

“I’m definitely more open to sharing my processes now because I was really quite private with my writing.

“I’d just shut myself away in a room.” 

Leo and Harts were the first to meet and the Gwynneville muso is hoping to catch up with the rest of Two Sense – Melbourne singer-songwriter Rowena Wise and producer Jayden Rando from Bunbury in Western Australia.

“I would really love to meet them,” she said.

“We don’t have anything in place because we’re all so busy but I really hope that we can work something out.”
