The 37-year-old can’t wait to race for one final time and cap off what has been a highly success 21-years in the sport.
“I’m extremely excited to be racing in this event, as this has been what I’ve had my eye on ever since I return to training, following the neck injury,” Berg said.
“As this was my main goal just to qualify for this event, I’m heading to North Cronulla with zero expectations.
“I’ve returned to full health, which was my primary focus and although I’m not quite at 100 per cent, I’m going to give it my all, one final time.”
Berg, who’s top finish in this series was a fifth in 2010/11, reflected on the experiences he had the pleasure enduring during his ironman career.
“I was actually chatting to Zane Holmes recently and we were discussing how I’ve raced against all the eras – from Trevor Hendy to Ky Hurst to Shannon Eckstein and now Ali Day - it’s been amazing” he said.
“I going to revel going up against the debutantes and getting int the mix with them on the three legs.
“But whatever happens, the main thing is that I get to walk away from the sport with a smile on my face and on my terms.”
Nowra-Culburra’s Kirsty Higgison, who finished second in last year’s series, will also be competing. Action starts Friday with the endurance event, before Saturday’s accumulator and Sunday’s eliminator format.
