In a memo dated January 30, council staff were informed of the policy to manage safety, protect property, identify the geographical location of council employees and equipment, deter vandalism, manage compliance and to optimise employee performance and efficiency.
“Shoalhaven City Council has developed this policy in line with the requirements of the Workplace Surveillance Act,” HR, governance and customer service manager Melissa McCoy said.
“This policy was developed over several months in consultation with Council’s Staff Consultative Committee and the United Services Union.
Mrs McCoy said much of the content of the policy had been previously covered across a number of council policies.
“Consolidating into one policy provides greater transparency for all staff,” she said.
“All employees received formal notification in writing of adoption of the policy in accordance with the Workplace Surveillance Act.”
Southern manager for United Services Union Gary Van said he was satisfied with the contents of the policy.
“At this stage it looks alright and there are safety nets for employees in place, he said.
“I don’t think it is a problem, we are still in consultation with Shoalhaven City Council and any problems will be raised with our members.”
