“The whole idea was to revitalise some of Dapto's more downbeat spaces to create something beautiful for the entire community,” said the cafe owner and secretary of Dapto’s Chamber of Commerce.
“I've noticed that when it gets dark in Dapto there's no one on the streets and its very quite and drab, hopefully this mural will bring some brightness into the town.”
The work, by artist Janne Atron aka Krimsone, is a vivid image of rosellas on a branch and can be found in the alleyway between the Dapto Hotel and Alexander’s Cafe.
Mr Murray said the idea came from working with Wollongong City Council with plans to revitalise the suburb, and this was something he could do now.
Mick Chamberlain from Rotary’s graffiti prevention team welcomed the permanent artwork and said it would definitely be a deterrent for spraycan tags.
“It’s been proved many times,” he said. “Graffiti so called artists like plain walls.”
Rotary has also sponsored a clear protection paint to go over the artwork once complete.
