Flinders Road, South Nowra to get $6.75m facelift

WORK on the $6.75 million upgrade of Flinders Road at South Nowra is well underway.

Anyone travelling on the eastern end of Flinders Road would have noticed the massive clearing on the road’s northern edge in preparation for the major route upgrade and widening between Norfolk Avenue and the Nowra Creek Bridge.

Federal, state and local government allocated $2.95 million, $3.1 million and $300,000 respectively to improve the link between the Princes Highway and Albatross Road.

The work will also include the construction of roundabout at the intersection of Albatross Road.

Shoalhaven City Council director Assets and Works Ben Stewart said the upgrade would produce a 13 metre wide sealed road with kerb and gutter and drainage throughout.

“The upgrade will provide a critical link for industry and allow passing at each of intersections which is currently restrained,” he said.

Mr Stewart said the work would allow greatly improved access for heavy vehicle.

The proposed roundabout at Albatross Road will actually consist of two concrete roundabouts, a primary and secondary, as well blister and splitter islands to move traffic.

“There will also be a component of street lighting to help improve the existing intersection,” he said.

As well as clearing for the eventual road safety improvement and widening, Telstra, NBN and Jemena Gas are also relocating existing facilities, utilities and infrastructure.

“This work is being carried out ahead of the awarding of the final construction contract, which is currently out to tender,” Mr Stewart said.

A report on the tenders would be presented to council in April, with work scheduled for completion by the end of 2017.

Mr Stewart said a quantity of the felled trees were mulched and were being used on other projects throughout the city, while other portions of timber would be milled into planks and others used for furniture production.

In November last year the long awaited link between the Princes Highway and Flinders Road at South Nowra opened to traffic. The $1.45 million road project links Browns Road to Flinders Road at the McDonalds’ South Nowra roundabout.

Flinders Road is one of a number of road projects council currently has underway.

Road reconstruction is currently being undertake on the unsealed section of Agars Lane in Berry, while widening and improvement work has also started on Culburra Road from the intersection with Coonamia Road. Rehabilitation work is also scheduled on Currarong Road, Prince Edward Avenue at Culburra Beach and Greenwell Point Road at Brundee.
