Talking through tough times
Talking therapies across the disciplines – counselling, mental health nursing, psychology, psychotherapy – help because they re-align cognitive understanding with affective (felt) experience. When these are out of alignment, inner turmoil arises and using talking therapies is the simplest, most efficient way forward.
A simple start is to look around for the right word(s) to adequately describe the experience. When this skill is undeveloped we experience a phenomena known as Alexythemia. This is the inability to adequately put into words and share our felt experiences in a manner that feels complete and true. Clearly, this is an important part of the healing process all talking therapies include.
A similarly important aspect of caring for the self in times of anguish, is the ability to align thoughts about what has happened with how you feel about what happened. When ideas, thoughts, beliefs or assumptions about Self, Other or World don’t support the lived experience of life then again, we experience anguish. Changing our minds – ideas, thoughts, beliefs, assumptions – is not easy to do.
It requires new perspectives to integrate newness into existing thought patterns and develop a stronger sense of Self, an enhanced understanding of what’s possible and deeper connections. With a little effort on your part, and some skill on the therapist’s part, this can be achieved for almost everyone, regardless of what they’ve gone through. At Red Orchid, we have a variety of talking therapists all with many years’ experience and registered with appropriate healthcare bodies, including AHPRA. By Ruth Tarrant.
