Are you a young sportsperson looking for extra fitness and core strength? Are you over 14 and want to be in a team?
If you fit into any of these categories than you should come to Paringa Park on February 18 to try the ever growing sport of dragon boat racing. It is a team sport with each member as important as the next; there are no stars in the boat. The team is paramount and each paddler is part of that team.
The sport is growing worldwide with teams participating in numerous events throughout each year; so as well as getting fit, members have the opportunity to travel to all parts of the world. Last year Nowra Waterdragons travelled to China with the Chinese government paying for the trip, so one can travel and not spend a lot of money.
The current age groups for racing are 14-25 Juniors, 25-40 Premiers, 40-50 Masters and 50 over Grandmasters for those who want to compete. But if you want to get fit and not compete you can still join and paddle each week with the club.
The club would like to invite anyone interested in trying this wonderful sport to come down to Paringa Park from 9.30am onwards until around 12.30pm to have a talk to our club members and try the sport with a paddle up or down the river. We’ll have a BBQ to follow for those who feel like it.
Racing is an optional activity with the club; as many members decide not to race but just paddle socially. We encourage both types of paddlers; as it is a great sport for those old football players and people finding it hard to get fit and lose weight.
First formed in November 2005, Nowra Waterdragons gathered members from a wide variety of backgrounds, ages and fitness levels. This diverse group had a common passion for dragon boat racing and enjoyed each-others company.
The love of racing in dragon boats continues with the club diversifying into other paddle craft such as outrigger canoes.
We train hard for dragon boat competitions; however we also have a diverse range of activities going on, such as fundraising, promotions, cross-training paddling and ... coffee!
The social aspects are also well covered with dinners, parties, shows and spontaneous get-togethers for a drink and a barbie.
Nowra Waterdragons value teamwork, passion, achievement and friendship. We aim to continually improve through committed training, to grow our club and to support each other.
