He will be allowed to stay at the showground for one more week.
Ian (surname withheld) needed to stay somewhere in Nowra because he has several several appointments (doctor, surgeon, oncologist and Centrelink) he needed to attend.
He has bowel cancer and other health problems. He asked for and was shown some compassion.
“I don’t know if I am dying but I am not very well,” Ian said.
“Obviously I have got problems and I know I am sick but what am I going to do?
“Basically I was living in the bush for a year struggling, passing out and walking looking at the stars.”
Shoalhaven City Council has been working with Ian and other agencies to see if alternative accommodation can be found over a number of months.
Council staff have consistently been sympathetic with the needs of the homeless but staff have also been given a clear direction from Council regarding removal of tents.
Council, at the same time, is trying to make the area safe for all people that may be staying at the showground during the Nowra Show and the needs of the show participants.
