Drivers will be travelling from various parts of NSW and the ACT to battle it out in the $475 to win memorial event, which honours Owen Campbell, a local Four Cylinder Sedan competitor, who passed away in 2014 at age 60.
Campbell was not only a speedway driver, having raced for four seasons, he was also the ultimate clubman, who was always more than willing to offer his assistance and help out around the track whenever he was needed.
“Owen was a keen racer and an overall speedway enthusiast, who was always committed to doing whatever he could to help the sport, so it’s fantastic to be able to honour his memory with this event,” Nowra Speedway president Dennis Richardson said.
“A high-paying event like this always helps the class to grow and we have to give special thanks to our major sponsor Orange Car Carriers and Powerplus Racing Fuels (NSW) for their valued support and for helping to make this event possible.”
Leading the field into battle will be Ed Newton, owner of Orange Car Carriers and Powerplus Racing Fuels (NSW), who has been the form driver at Nowra Speedway so far this season and will hope to take top honours when he goes up against the likes of Newcastle’s former NSW Champion Aaron Barnes.
Matthew Layton, from Lismore, is another tough competitor who will join the line-up, along with locals Richardson and Wayne Faulkner, who will be hoping to utilise their experience on their home track to achieve a strong result.
The format for the Owen Campbell Memorial will see drivers contest three rounds of heat races and a 20-lap feature race. In a further tribute to Campbell, his son, Andrew, will lead the parade lap prior to the feature race in his dad’s # 13 Datsun 1600.
