“I am gutted, completely gutted. I’m really sickened,” an emotional Mrs Hancock said.
She said social media had made life intolerable for politicians, including Mr Baird.
“Who would go into politics these days?”
She said the negative social media comments directed at Mr Baird have “sickened and saddened” her.
“That they could break a man like Mike Baird is reprehensible and unforgivable,” she said.
She said “keyboard warriors” should understand there were consequences for real people when they vented on social media.
She said Mr Baird had even been subjected to torrents of vitriol for the most innocent of posts about his children doing well at sport.
“He was a bright young man with a vision who decided to make some really tough decisions.
“Today is a really sad day for me.”
Mrs Hancock said despite the tough environment in which politicians found themselves, she would still contest another term for her seat of South Coast at the next state election.
