RSPCA Shoalhaven manager Sharon Johnson had some great tips to keep dogs safe on hot days.

“All the dogs here have pools and we spray some dogs with the hose if they like it,” she said.

“We fill takeaway containers with water, a little bit of stock or Vegemite, add treats and freeze it, so when they go back to their kennels at night they get a frozen treat. We also stuff Kongs with tin dog food and freeze them, the bones we give them are always frozen as well.”

Ms Johnson also had advice for pet owners.

“People should make sure their pets have water, use large containers of water for the dogs and have backup water in case they knock it over,” she said.

“Clam pools are great and if they don’t want to swim in them it’s another water source for them they can’t knock over and they should always have shade.” 

Travelling with pets should be avoided but if it is necessary owners should be mindful of their four-legged friend.

“If you’re travelling put a non slip mat down for your dog if they travel on the back of a ute, that will keep the heat off their feet, but preferably put them in the car with you with the air conditioning on,” Ms Johnson said. 

“People still aren’t getting the message about leaving dogs in hot cars, it only takes six minutes for a dog to die.

“If you are going to a supermarket and think you will duck in quickly, you have no idea how many busy it will be, how long the line is, you might bump into someone you know, six minutes goes by so quickly and you may come out to a deceased animal.”
