Nowra’s Gary and Vickie Gilbert will be taking part in the journey from Adelaide to Cairns, via outback Australia, to raise money for the Cancer Council.
In need of a car worth $1000 to suit the rally’s requirements, the pair is now ready to hit the road thanks to a car donated by Craig Solomon from Solomon Motor Group.
The Gilberts are now on a mission to raise a minimum of $4000 to participate in the rally.
A charity golf day will be held on Sunday, February 4 at Worrigee Golf Course.
Entries are now being taken for teams of four. Entry is $50 per person and includes breakfast, lunch and two vouchers for drinks cart.
The event has already seen some healthy competition between local emergency services, with police, ambulance and nurses ready to step up to the tee.
The event will kick off from 8.30am and will finish with drinks, a presentation and a raffle draw at the end of the day.
There’s just so much incredible country to explore out there.
- Gary Gilbert
Anyone interested in participating is encouraged to contact Gary on 0432 011 910 or Vickie on 0434 030 089. Payment can be made over the phone.
All proceeds from the day will be donated to the Cancer Council.
If golf isn’t your thing but tasty treats are, Vickie has also compiled a cookbook packed with recipes contributed by staff at Nowra Private Hospital.
The cookbook features 68 tried and tested recipes and is available for $20. All proceeds go to the Cancer Council. Contact Vickie to purchase a copy.
This year’s Shitbox Rally will see the couple travel more than 3,800 kilometres, starting from May 27 to June 2.
It will be the first time Gary has joined the rally but for Vickie, it’s an experience she didn’t expect again.
“I did it about four or five years ago and I said I’d never do it again,” she laughed.
“We went from Adelaide to Ayers Rock to Fremantle in six day and it was fun but I was ready to ditch the swag by the end of it.”
After a bit of convincing Vickie is back on board and both her and Gary are looking forward to the event.
“There’s just so much incredible country to explore out there,” Gary said.
“We’re also really happy to be raising money for the Cancer Council. It’s a great cause.”
