Mick Fairbairn sailing GOF cleared out quickly to take the lead over Wayne Norris’s Never Satisfied with the two of them sailing well and remaining uncontested throughout the race in 1st and 2nd places. The battle for third was between father and son, Steve Phelps sailing Moving Along and Cameron in Green Titan. The first 2 laps saw these 2 positions swap around before Steve managed to open up a bit of a gap. In a tactical move on the return on the 4th lap Cameron chose to stick to the southern bank with less current to fight and fewer jellyfish to hit. This move saw Cameron more than halve the gap to his father. For the final 2 laps Steve covered Cameron’s moves and managed to just hold on to cross the finish ahead of Cameron.
The other 3 boats were Mark McKinnon in Tobelaki, Stephen Long sailing The Number and Dave Horton and Rod Dean sailing Muppet Machine. Mark and Dave, with Rod, also held a close race changing positions a number of times in the first few laps. Steve had been having one of those days where little things kept going wrong, and this continued on the water where he had a bad couple of first laps putting him some distance at the back of the field. For the second half of the race Mark continued to sail well and was able to open up and hold a gap to finish in 5th and very happy that he did not get lapped by Mick. Stephen’s second half of the race improved and was able to recover some of his lost ground from the first 2 laps however Muppet Machine held on finishing in 6th place still well ahead of Stephen.
On yardstick corrected time for the Club Championship, the winner was Wayne, then Mick, Steve, Cameron, Mark, Dave & Rod and finally Stephen. Results on handicap were again Wayne first, then Cameron, Steve, Mark, Mick, Dave & Rod then Stephen. The Kel Campbell Trophy of the day went to a well deserving Wayne with the double win.
