The Australian Federal Police case against Gordon Lance Gately, 66, was strictly suppressed until Tuesday when his lawyer asked for a non-publication order on his client’s identity be lifted.
It is alleged he attempted to import a number of restricted weapons.
Gately hasn’t entered pleas to charges of intentionally importing prohibited firearms without approval, two counts of acquiring a firearm without a licence, two counts of acquiring a pistol part without authority, acquiring ammunition for firearm without licence and failing to comply with order to assist access to data.
While details of the police case against Gately are yet to be made public, court documents reveal he allegedly attempted to import a Glock 17 firearm and suppressor, two Glock 26 firearms, 400 rounds of 9mm ammunition, two extended Glock magazines, a Pietro beretta .22 pistol and suppressor between March 29 and April 12 this year.
Gately’s defence lawyer originally applied for bail due to him suffering severe cirrhosis which needed treatment 24 hours a day including monitoring every four hours.
He also suffered seizures and there were indications of Alzheimers disease.
His defence lawyer said Gately had lived in Nowra all his life and could post a cash surety of $100,000 as well as a car worth more than $50,000.
Police prosecutors opposed bail due to the nature and gravity of the offences.
They believe he could receive sufficient treatment through Corrective Services NSW.
It was also stated he had inherited hundreds of thousands of dollars and had the means to obtain a fraudulent identification.
Gately was again refused bail and will reappear on February 7.
