NSW Police gathered 762 kilograms of food and has challenged the NSW RFS to better that effort.
Shoalhaven RFS district officer James Morris said the service was up to the challenge.
“We are keen to outdo the police which means we need your help,” he said.
“The Shoalhaven has a history of digging deep and helping those less fortunate and we hope that help continues for this project.
“Every little bit helps.”
Perishable food is being collected and can be dropped at Shoalhaven Fire Control in Albatross Road.
Donations will be gladly accepted Monday to Friday between 8am and 5pm.
The final pick up date is Monday, December 19.
“The items will be given to FoodBank NSW,” Mr Morris said “and will then assist in providing food to the homeless and less fortunate in NSW and the ACT.
“If you have any non perishable food that you are able to donate we would love to take it off your hands.”
FoodBank NSW, a not-for-profit organisation which collects food from farmers, manufacturers, distributors, retailers and the public and makes it available to Australia’s hard working charities and community groups.
NSW RFS is sending a semi-trailer on the road, and wants to fill it up. The food will then be taken to Bankstown to ‘stuff a chopper’ or two.
Mr Morris said the aim was to fill a cargo net under one of the big Skycrane firefighting helicopters.
Shoalhaven Fire Control Centre is located at 92 Albatross Road, Nowra.
