Teacher and team coach Steve Grant has been coaching the team for 25 years and this is the first time he has ever progressed to the final four with a school team.
“During my tenure, we have been South Coast champions four times but could never take that next step into the final four of the state,” Grant said.
“It’s very special to make it through to the finals, especially considering it is my final year in charge.”
Their journey continued when they won the semi-final against Armidale’s Ben Venue Public School in Maitland on Tuesday morning, at the state finals in Maitland.
“We scored a solid 158 in our innings, thanks to Lachlan Barr’s 43 not out, Drew Ramsden’s 40 not out and Jay Ramsden’s 35 not out,” Grant said.
“Then Ben Venue ended on 124, thanks to Lachlan Barr’s 4/13, which included a hat-trick, and Cooper Jones’ 2/15.”
The boys then had a quick turnaround and played the final, against Sydney’s Lindfield Public School just a couple of hours later. Lindfield batted first and scored 5/160 from their 25 overs and in response, Milton fell just short in their chase.
“The school is extremely proud of the team,” Grant said.
