Wedding cakes usually conjure up images of delicately piled cream puff creations but one Kangaroo Valley woman changed that recently.

Kathy Harrington made her son’s wedding cake out of a variety of different cheeses. Weighing in at around nine kilograms, the cake was washed down with a toast by all at the Barossa Valley wedding.
“It was a naval wedding so the cake was cut with a ceremonial sword,” Kathy said.
“The bride and groom were thrilled with their unusual cake and the wedding guests were most impressed with the flavour and variety of the cheeses.”
A creamy blue with a red rind wash, a Roquefort, brie, Havarti and two cheddars took to the cheeseboard to form the creation.
The cheeses had an interesting life leading up to the wedding, even surviving the power outages in Adelaide while they stayed with the bride’s mother.
“The rest of the cheese I drove from Kangaroo Valley to the Barossa Valley and my husband thinks the cheese got more attention than he did,” Kathy said.
“We had two 36 degree days so you can imagine I was a little bit worried.”
Kathy thanked her friends Rosie Johnson, Jan Watson and expert cheese maker, Patrick Reubinson for their help in year-long process.
A serious cheese enthusiast, Kathy is behind the move to host the inaugural cheese competition at Kangaroo Valley Show in February.
“As far as I know there’s no shows between here and Bemboka that have a cheese section so we’re really looking forward to it,” she said.
A national cheese judge from Victoria will be coming for the event and Kathy said they’re hoping for as many entries as possible.
“A lot of people have been very interested and the public will be able to have a good look at the cheese so it will certainly be something different,” she said.
